Aerial work platforms, also known as aerial platforms or elevating work platforms (EWP), are mechanical devices designed to provide temporary access for people or equipment to otherwise inaccessible areas at height. These versatile tools are used in various industries, from construction to safety maintenance and the entertainment industry.
In addition to EWP, these platforms are also commonly referred to as AWPs (Aerial Work Platforms) and MEWPs (Mobile Elevating Work Platforms).
These abbreviations are often used interchangeably in the industry.
Common Types of Lifting Machines
There are numerous models of lifting machines, which can be equipped with different types of accessories, some of which have very specific functions. Some of the most common ones include:
Telescopic Lifts
Telescopic lifts are the most common type of lifting machine and can be equipped with various attachments, such as pallet forks, lifting hooks, elevated work platforms, and operator baskets. This flexibility makes them suitable for multiple tasks, from material handling to infrastructure maintenance.
The heart of a telescopic lift is its telescopic arm. This component can extend forward and upward, allowing for considerable height reach. The length of the arm varies depending on the model and can easily exceed 30 meters.
Lifting Capacity: Telescopic lifts are designed to lift heavy loads. This versatility makes them suitable for a wide range of tasks, from moving construction materials to placing beams or pipes.
Spider Lifts
Mounted on tracks, spider lifts get their name from their appearance, which may resemble that of a spider. They can operate both indoors and outdoors and are excellent for use on uneven and irregular terrains. They are equipped with telescopic or articulated arms and hydraulic stabilizers.
Scissor Lifts
Characterized by a scissor-like structure that extends vertically, scissor lifts are ideal for small maintenance and installation jobs.
Aerial work platform manufacturers
Several aerial platform manufacturers are active worldwide. Some of the most well-known ones include: Haulotte, Genie, JLG, Socage, Cela Oil & Steel, Isoli, Merlo, Manitou, CTE,Terex Palazzani.
Bushings: Uses and Functions
Bushings play a fundamental role in lifting machines. They can be mounted at the pivot points and cylinders, supporting and regulating movements. The use of high-quality bushings allows for gradual adjustment of movements, avoiding abrupt variations and shocks to the machine, ensuring the safety of the operator and the load.
Since their use is related to lifting, they are often colloquially referred to as lifting bushings or lifting sleeves. Different materials can be used, such as bronze, plastic, and steel. Of course, for heavier loads, steel is preferred.

Trade show and Exhibition
If you want to see some of these machines live, we recommend visiting the GIS Expo , the lifting fair in Piacenza, Italy, or the JDL Expo , its French equivalent.
There, you can discover the latest innovations and technologies in the field of aerial platforms and lifts.
