The ACCO Super Bulldozer holds the title of the largest bulldozer ever built, with an operating weight of 183 tons, a length of 12 meters, and a blade that measures 7 meters wide and 2.7 meters high. Developed in the 1980s in Portogruaro, Italy, by the ambitious company Umberto Acco, it was intended for export to Libya. However, due to the U.S. trade embargo imposed in 1986, the bulldozer was never shipped and remained unused.

Umberto Acco was known for its ambitious engineering projects and innovation. In addition to the Super Bulldozer, the company also built a massive grader during the same period, further demonstrating its technical prowess and vision.

The ACCO Super Dozer was constructed using Caterpillar components, including a custom blade larger than any produced by Caterpillar itself. Its drivetrain was specifically designed to handle the immense weight and power of the machine. The bulldozer is powered by two Caterpillar engines, each delivering 675 HP, for a combined total of 1350 HP (1010 kW).

ACCO Super Dozer: Specs

  • Operating weight: 183 tons

  • Engine power: 1010 kW / 1350 HP (503/675 HP x 2 engines)

  • Blade capacity: 25.5 m³

  • Blade dimensions: 7 m x 2.7 m

  • Length: 12 m

  • Height: 6.5 m

  • Width: 7 m

Comparison with the Caterpillar D11T CD

The Caterpillar D11T CD is one of the most widely used bulldozers globally. Designed for operational efficiency and reduced energy consumption during earthmoving tasks, its frame is engineered to withstand extreme stress and can be rebuilt multiple times without compromising structural integrity.

 Caterpillar D11T CD: Specs

  • Operating weight: 112.72 tons

  • Engine power: 695 kW (913 HP)

  • Blade capacity: 43.6 m³

  • Blade dimensions: 6.7 m x 2.95 m

  • Length: 10.71 m

  • Height: 4.72 m

  • Width: 3.81 m

Acco Umberto: History

The Umberto Acco company, active since 1945 and registered with the Builders’ Register in 1965, was based in Portogruaro. It became renowned for designing exceptionally large earthmoving machines. In 1980, it built two unique pieces of equipment: the ACCO Super Bulldozer, which we have discussed in detail in this article, and the ACCO grader, an equally impressive machine.

In 2005, following a corporate reorganization, Impresa Acco Umberto S.A.S. was established, specializing in civil and industrial construction, infrastructure, and road paving materials.

The Acco name remains a symbol of mechanical engineering excellence and innovation in the field of heavy machinery.

ACCO Super Dozer: Back in Action

The ACCO Super Dozer stands out for its extraordinary size and engineering but never fulfilled its intended purpose due to geopolitical circumstances. However, on October 13, 2024, in Portogruaro, this legendary machine roared back to life after years of inactivity.
